How to organise your parents' medical care remotely
You live in one city and your mother lives in another. How can you make sure she takes her medication, eats properly, is doing well? Remote medical monitoring is the challenge of millions of caregivers.
Assess the situation
Before putting tools in place, take stock of your parent’s level of autonomy. Do they have cognitive problems? Can they use a phone? Are there neighbours or relatives nearby? This assessment determines which solutions to favour.
Build a local team
Even from a distance, you need people on the ground: a trusted neighbour, a home-care helper, a community nurse for daily visits, the local pharmacist. These people are your eyes and ears.
The essential digital tools
A medication reminder tool with alerts when a dose is missed is the foundation, as detailed in our guide to remote treatment tracking. It must be simple enough for your parent to use (one button, no app to install) and complete enough to keep you informed in real time. Add a regular video call to maintain the connection.
Coordinate the family
If you are several children, share the responsibilities. A shared dashboard avoids the “I thought you were calling” situations. Define who is the main contact for the GP, who manages appointments, who handles prescription renewals.
Anticipate emergencies
Prepare a file accessible to all caregivers: list of medications, GP and specialist numbers, known allergies, designated trusted person. In an emergency, every minute counts.
